Why can't I download a Google image to my phone?

I want to download a certain picture from google pictures for my whatsapp profile picture. I keep tapping the Google image, then tap download image and then I can't find this image anywhere on my phone. Neither in the download manager nor in the gallery. I have an Android Huawei phone. What am I doing wrong?
