With my P Smart, I can choose the default path to the SD card. Is this then integrated as an internal storage and I can install apps on this?
Use SD card as a standard path is the only meaningful because otherwise the internal memory is very quickly full and the smartphone slow and overloaded. You can access all things on the SD card normally do not worry. ^^
From your answer, I understand that the SD card so expanded the system memory. So do not roast yet 🙂
The SD card does not expand the memory, it is an additional memory. Internal memory and SD card are two separate separate memory but the device can work with both. It's all good as it is.

No you do not need to root. I would generally advise against that. What's the question? XD
The setting causes the files created by Apps to land on the SD. I would let this nonsense, an SD as an internal memory to integrate.
I have never had problems with other devices!
