Depends on whether the SD card was registered as an external memory card in the system or whether the option was used to use the SD card as an extension of the system memory ("Formatting as internal memory"). In the first case, it stays as it was, not necessarily in the second case.
I simply inserted the SD card. Is that then external or internal?
If Android has not asked what to do and you can put the SD card with the phone off in the PC and there can see data, then the external memory and everything is fine.
