It is possible with alternative YouTube apps such as NewPipe or YouTube Vanced.
New Pipe is a newly developed YouTube client with its own design. The app is also open source.

For music:
You go to the browser and open the video there.
Open the menu with the 3 dots in the top right and select Desktop website.
Run the video and close the browser.
The video pauses, but you can now continue it above by pressing the play button in the status bar of your mobile phone.
Yes, I do that with firefox, because there's an older youtube there. Listen to a video, scroll to the end. Then, as in the past on youtube, the play symbol and a circle that closes around it appear. Turn on Autoplay beforehand. During these 5 seconds simply switch away from firefox and the next song will run in the background.
Yes, you download the NewPipe app from the F-Droid Store. It has all the premium features and is simply an open source YouTube interface. The whole thing is of course trustworthy.
