Yes you can connect Airpods to an Android device. If you ask if it makes sense and it pays off, I have to say no. I totally agree with Juliusrp's answer. It is neither profitable, just draws disadvantages, such as no use of features and a further disadvantage would be the general connection to the device, since Android devices will not have AAC, only a connection to SBC will take place, which again results in a significantly higher latency.
On the other hand, you get better products for the price, be it in terms of sound, battery life or price.
